Study Shows Cannabis Shrinked Aggressive Brain Cancer Tumor

Medical Cannabis May Enhance Cancer Treatment, Researchers Suggest

Researchers at the University of London have investigated whether compounds found in cannabis could improve cancer treatment. Their findings suggest that purified cannabinoids may help reduce tumor growth and could potentially make certain cancer therapies more effective.

According to a study published in the International Journal of Oncology, cannabinoids showed promising anti-tumor activity. The researchers found that when highly purified cannabinoids were used alongside chemotherapy, the combination destroyed cancer cells more effectively in their experimental models than chemotherapy alone. If these findings continue to be supported through further research, combining cannabinoids with chemotherapy could allow some patients to receive lower doses of chemotherapy.

Reducing the amount of chemotherapy required may help lessen many of its well-known side effects, such as nausea, fatigue, hair loss, and general physical discomfort. It is important to note that the treatment examined in the study involved concentrated, purified cannabinoids under controlled conditions. The researchers did not conclude that simply smoking marijuana produces the same effects.

Access to cannabinoid-based treatments varies from country to country because laws surrounding medical cannabis differ around the world. As a result, some patients may not currently have access to therapies being investigated in clinical research. The publication also noted that numerous laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated anti-tumor effects of THC and other cannabinoids across a variety of cancer models. These encouraging results have provided the scientific basis for conducting clinical studies involving human patients to better understand their safety and effectiveness. While the research is promising, further clinical trials are needed before definitive conclusions can be made about the role of cannabinoids in cancer treatment. Those interested in learning more are encouraged to read the original study published in the International Journal of Oncology.
