Curcuma Longa/Cúrcuma is a small perennial herb native to India bearing many rhizomes on its root system which are the source of its culinary spice known as Turmeric (Cúrcuma – rizoma secco in polvere) and its medicinal extract called Curcumin (Cúrcuma extracto refinado).

Botanical Classification by Carolus Linnaeus:

The Spice Curcuma/Turmeric

  • Description: a yellow/brown powder made from the dried rhizome of Curcuma Longa. It has a slight earthy flavor and little aroma. It is known for its color and for its health-giving properties.
  • Benefits of Turmeric: a Singapore study of the elderly demonstrated a positive connection between turmeric/curry consumption and cognitive function. People who ate curry often (more than once a month) or ate it occasionally (once or more in 6 months) performed significantly better in mental tests than did those who ate curry less than once a month. (American Journal of Epidemiology 11/2006.)

Use:

  • in Curry powder, Curcuma is added to the mix of spices which usually consist of: coriander, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, chili, mustard seeds, black peppercorns and salt.
  • as a tea (for example in Okinawa): turmeric can be added to hot water and then strained (with touch of ginger and lemon juice); it can also be added to milk and simmered.

Description of the Extract: Curcumin/Curcuma

Curcuma is a yellow-orange polyphenol. In its usual form it is a dry yellow powder that is oil-soluble. Curcuma is without flavor and aroma. Its strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics are its most obvious medicinal properties.

Curcuma is derived from the root of the Curcuma Longa plant first by drying and powdering, to create the spice called Turmeric, then by a solvent extraction. The resulting refined powder is 18 times stronger in the essential ingredients than is the common spice.

Research on Curcuma has been focused on Alzheimer’s, Arthritis, Cancer and Diabetes. In laboratory experiments on rodents, Curcuma can break up the Alzheimer’s amyloid-beta polymers, suppress arthritic inflammation, induce apoptosis in some cancer types and improve insulin sensitivity. Human trials of Curcuma for some illnesses are underway.

Medicinal Properties of Curcumin:

Curcuma Longa extract has significant effects in the laboratory on arthritis, amyloid-beta (Alzheimer’s polymers), cancer and diabetes. It has the following properties:

  • anti-oxidant;
  • Arthritis: inhibits inflammation, possibly inhibiting something in the pathway of Cox-2 but not Cox-2 itself; not only does it not cause ulcers but is currently being used experimentally as a treatment for ulcers in western countries.
  • Alzheimer’s Disease: inhibits formation of, and breaks down, Amyloid-beta oligomers (entwined fibres) and aggregates (lumps) in rodents;
  • blood thinning: reduces clotting and clinging together of platelets;
  • Cancer: causes apoptosis (death) of various cancer cell types including skin, colon, forestomach, duodenum and ovary in the laboratory; we await clinical trials;
  • inhibits viral and fungal disease;
  • inhibits bacteria including Helicobacter Pylori;
  • Diabetes: reduces diabetes in rodents; we await clinical trials.

Traditional and Modern Uses of Curcuma Longa

  • In India, Curcuma Longa has been in use as a culinary ingredient since 3000 BC. It is used as a food coloring for curry and as a preservative for food. As a medicine it is used to treat a wide variety of ailments including stomach ache, skin problems, muscular problems and arthritis. Curcuma Longa has also been used as a clothing dye and as a cosmetic. Indians are thought to consume between 80 and 200 mg per day of Curcuma Longa extract. India as a whole consumes 480,000 tons of turmeric annually.
  • In China it has been used as a topical analgesic, and for colic, hepatitis, ringworm and chest pain.
  • In Europe it is used in many foods as a coloring in mustard, cheese, margarine, beverages and cakes. In the recent past it has been used for dyspepsia, chronic anterior uveitis and Helicobacter pylori bacteria.
  • It is generally recognized as safe by the FDA of the United States.
  • Availability: in capsule form as a health supplement and as the culinary spice Turmeric.

As of October 2011 there are more than 4300 articles cited by Pubmed on the subject of Curcuma Longa products including 1604 on cancer, 66 on arthritis, 181 on alzheimer’s disease and 151 on diabetes. This demonstrates that Curcuma Longa is now being used in new ways.

The Truth About Organic Farming & Why It Matters

The food you eat is only as healthy as the food it eats that being the SOIL!

Would you like to see more organic produce on the market, and at more reasonable prices? As interest in organic farming continues to grow in the United States—it rose by $3.7 billion from 2015 to 2016 to an estimated $47 billion industry wide—the answer to those questions seem to be yes. Yet while these numbers seem to be huge, they represent a mere 1 percent of farmland in the US that is dedicated to growing organic products.

Farmers could use some help bringing those numbers up, which would give us consumers broader, healthier, and more inexpensive produce choices. Currently, growers are stymied by long certification processes and complicated regulations, among other restrictions, that are forcing US food companies to look to overseas suppliers.

Many of us who choose to live as naturally as possible may have started buying organic foods because we wanted to reduce the amount of pesticides and antibiotics our bodies ingest, or because it’s better for the planet, or because it’s an easy way to eliminate a lot of processed additives and preservatives from our diets. But there’s another good reason to buy organic, and that’s to ensure that you are not eating any GMOs.

If you don’t know whether or not you’re eating genetically modified organisms, you’re not alone—at least in the U.S. Despite the many petitions and appeals for state or federal regulations on labeling foods that contain GMOs, none have passed. And that means companies still don’t have to disclose whether or not a product includes genetically modified organisms. What’s the big deal, you ask?

More than 60 countries require GMO labeling (or ban GMOs altogether) for a number of reasons. While there are many, these are some of the most common concerns:

1. Are they safe? Monsanto, Syngenta, DuPont, Dow—they’ll all tell you their GMO products have met safety requirements, but the truth is, long term studies haven’t been done on their impact to the human body. USDA approval requires several processes that prove safety, but GMOs have only been in our diet since the mid-’90s, so it’s difficult to know what the long-term health impacts truly are.

2. Known health risks: What we do know is that when genetic modification happens, genes are forced to express certain traits (including pesticides). To do this, the scientists “turn on” all the gene’s components, which can mean releasing allergens that would normally not be expressed in a non-GMO variety. Experts like Jeffrey Smith suggest this is directly related to the rise in health issues.

3. Heavy use of toxic pesticides and herbicides: By design, genetically modified seeds require pesticides and herbicides. While some manufacturers have claimed the pesticide use would decrease over time, it’s only increased, according to a peer-reviewed 2012 study.

4. Pesticides and digestive health: The main function of herbicides and pesticides is to kill unwanted plants and insects. Glyphosate—the most common herbicide used on GMO crops—has been shown to negatively impact the gut bacteria of humans. Jeffrey Smith’s recent film Genetic Roulette highlights the parallel of GMOs in our diet and the rise in digestive health issues and food allergies.

5. Cancer: Both pesticides and GMOs have been connected with an increased risk of certain types of cancer. There are additonal health concerns too including reproductive issues, autism and even heart disease.

6. Environmental impact: GMO crops and their companion pesticides and herbicides wreak havoc on the environment including polluting air, water and soil. Glyphosate—marketed by Monsanto as the herbicide Roundup—is in effect, an antibiotic, which can destroy soil quality and thus impair the plant’s nutritional value as well. Cross-polination between GMO and non-GMO crops is common as well, and can destroy natural plant varieties in the wild.

7. Superbugs and superweeds: Despite the claims that pesticides and GMO crops can relieve farmers of crop-destroying insects and plants, the opposite is showing to be true. Farmers in the Midwest are now battling superbugs and superweeds resistant to pesticides. They’re damaging crops and farm equipment and costing the farmers more money in having to apply heavier doses of toxic pesticides.

8. Patent issues: At the core of the GMO industry is the corporate ownership of seed and seed patents. Companies like Monsanto are notorious for suing small farmers for saving seeds or if GMO crop drift pollinates on their land.

9. Corporate protection: A few years ago, the U.S. government passed a bill nicknamed the “Monsanto Protection Act.” In essence, it grants biotech companies immunity from the courts, even if a judge determines it’s unlawful to plant GMO crops, the companies can do it anyway.

10. Prolific presence: Whether or not GMOs are safe has yet to be determined, yet every day, millions of Americans eat them unknowingly due to the lack of labeling requirements. Are you a lab rat? Don’t you at least have the right to know what you’re eating?

So, what happens if the agents do find traces of GMOs on an organic farm? While you may be inclined to think that they would immediately shut it down, this isn’t the case, and that’s actually a good thing. As long as the organic farmers are showing due diligence to not use GMOs, they will not be punished if seeds from nearby conventional farms contaminate their farm. The USDA will work with them to determine the source of the contamination and help them develop better barriers such as larger buffer zones, physical barriers, and even better cleaning of machines that may be used to process both organic and conventional crops. This helps the USDA in creating more effective regulations to keep organic farms truly organic.
